I'm planning on applying for Google Code: Summer of Code program in summer 2005. This page will track my links and status.
I know it's a long shot that I might get chosen, but it's $4500 to work on projects I've already been interested in. There's a good chance I would contribute to these projects anyway -- but a big bounty can't hurt. I had a discussion with some friends about summer jobs, and we decided the best money was in computer contracting. I'm psyched at the idea of getting paid by Google to do open source development.
My plan is to expand/polish the LiveJournal MogileFS distributed file system model. Presently, it's at a 1.00 "works for us" version. I'll add documentation and admin tools to easier to adapt/use in other environments. I'll investigate security and trust issues with their model, and make the storage node part more configurable. These improvements to the MogileFS core will be the Summer of Code project.
The goal once the SoC part is done is to look at using MogileFS as a data store back-end for the excellent BackupPC backup software. More on that later.
