My Eagle Planner politely reminds me that it’s time to take out the old and prepare for the new. It doesn’t make a big deal about new years. I don’t think it’s that easy for people. There’s something about the transition from year to year that makes people reflective, remorseful, and hopeful and energetic. And what better place to be all of that than on a blog.

Going to Lic and Veah’s tonight for NYE. Should be a lot of fun. The department gave us the afternoon off, so I’ll spend that time to run around and get prepped.

Writing the word 2003 seems odd — I had to do that on some tape labels today. I wonder how many checks I’ll mess up until I get the hang of it.

More later, where you get to hear my resolutions on being more aerobic and more giving in 2003. You’ll get to hear about my 10-year projections in 1993 and my predictions for where we’ll be in 2013.

New history online

General December 30th, 2002

There. I spent my “break” at work getting the new history view online. It’s much easier for me to program from a unix box…. I’m quicker in a local XEmacs environment, can have multiple windows open to check different code and log outputs. The funny part is, I use my laptop/Windows box for browsing. So I’d update something, and look over my shoulder to the laptop and hit reload. In my experience, most Unix web browsers suck. (Or, at least now, my Sun sucks too much to run the good ones.)

Back to work

Being at work at 8am is early…. And payroll sucks.

7494, Chinese food, TiVo and WDC drives doesn’t add up to much

General December 28th, 2002

It’s a good thing when you’re on vacation you don’t have to justify or qualify your time. I admit, I worked pretty hard the days I was home before Christmas, but the last part of this week has just been lazy. I’ve been sleeping late, not getting much done in the time I’m awake (sort of website rewrites), and retiring early. Don’t think I’m complaining — this is great — it’s just so different it seems odd. And then I remember I’m still on vacation.

I took the Maxima in for its 7500 mile maintenance — basically, an oil change it didn’t need yet, and a tire rotation, and systems check. The brakes feel different, and the ride is a little altered, but it’s all in all about the same and I’m out $60. The irony is I literally was at 7494 when I drove up to the dealer, and I didn’t even try to get that close — that’s just where the miles took me. I half-considered driving around another 6 miles just to make it ‘official’, but decided that was too anal.

Spent tonight putting my new HD in Mom’s computer and making a backup of her data. She’s moving to XP tomorrow, and for being as computer saavy as she is, she’s a real update Luddite. She’s real scared I’m going to ruin her life by jumping her from Windows 98 to XP. But, no one makes drivers for her (new, had to special order 98 from Gateway) hardware and she wants the nicest bells and whistles. Maybe she doesn’t understand I do backups for a living, and even if I didn’t, how hard is it to put Windows 98 back the way it was?

While Western Dig’s utilities were copying data, I spent the time catching up on my week of TiVo — which was mainly cooking shows Mom wanted, and some of the older recordings from before I went home. I still need to watch the Braggin’ Rights game. One of the CSI’s we watched had a (murdered) girl who ordered Sweet and Sour Pork, so guess what we ordered out for dinner?

Yeah, vacations, ya gotta love ‘em.

Linked into the main site

General December 26th, 2002

Whoo! I realized I would instantly get CSS support if I included the blog stuff into my current site. Since it’s all php now, that integration was easy. Fixed up a few relative links, and we’re online!

Happy Christmas to me — the blog is up!

Admin functions moved to a protected area

General December 26th, 2002

As CK showed me a while ago, I moved the admin parts of the blog to an apache access controlled section. Now to play with the main views, and history views, and put them online somewhere.

Something cool, once I’m happy with how things are currently laid out, would be to import all of my old .plan entries … making a mega-blog, pre-populated with 4ish years of entries!

Oooh, getting closer

General December 26th, 2002

So close, almost there….

First webform added posts

General December 26th, 2002

If this works properly, this is my first add from the admin interface.

Working on it

General December 26th, 2002

I had some posts in here, and then something went really wacky…. so I deleted them and started over. Sometimes phpmyadmin doesn’t cure everything.

Main goals for today… get a ‘main page’ view up, the admin view, and get a history view up, with the ability to see older posts (somehow.) Added niceities will be CSS controling all the output, and adding an admin submit page.

First post!!

General December 2nd, 2002

Testing my journal system. This should be the first post, and will probably be deleted later.
