it’s been a while
General January 11th, 2004
Happy holidays, and 2004, bloggers.
I haven’t posted anything in months, and I apologize for that. I’ve been really busy moving into our new building at work, the Siebel Center for Computer Science. We started working in there around October, validating the networking (meaning the jacks worked, were labeled properly, and that our jackmaps were accurate.) Siebel has over 1700 copper connections and even more fiber, so this was a daunting task. The middle of December, TSG moved our offices to the new building and served as the guinea pigs for the move process and basic building operations. That means for the first two weeks I was in the new building, I still had to wear boots and a hard hat, and had no working bathroom in the building. They would test the fire alarms, or cut the power/test the generator. My office was a nice 80-88 degrees, when the themostat on the wall was working, even though it was single digits cold outside.
Last week, people start moving in. The building is now “up,” with almost all the grad students and faculty moved in, but there are still areas that aren’t done. 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor have wired and wireless networking. Only half the first floor is up, and the basement isn’t slated to be done until late next week. There are still lots of areas in the basement that aren’t done, and we’ll have contractors in the building for some time fixing and finishing things, but we had to move. I’m hoping the worst is over, and my 14 hour days can stop. If you want a tour, come find me. My office is 2316 – second floor, southeast side.
When I wasn’t working, I was trying to kick a cold … and that’s how I’ll remember the final weeks of 2003. Working hard, and getting home late, and going to sleep. I don’t like how Nyquil tastes like Yager.
But 2004 is upon us, and I’m feeling better. Today, Sunday, is one of my first days off in a while, and I’m relaxing. Hope the holidays treated you well!
