Raw talent

I wish I had the kind of raw talent that makes high school seniors decide to skip college and move right on to the professional world.
Shawn Livingston dupes Duke, decides to go pro
Granted, it’s professional sports, and not “real work,” but I think it’s neat that a seventeen year old has those kind of choices. “Sorry Coach K, I know I would probably start for you as a freshman, but I’m going to play for the Bulls, okay?” Maybe they’ll be successful, maybe not, but they have that choice.
No one calls prospective Computer Science students and offers them jobs prior to at least some education. Maybe that’s what we need - a CS draft. Bah, it’s all going to India anyway.
The management seminars I’ve been to talk about how everyone has choices. Most of our behavior is set by norms, and not wanting to break those or face consequences of an action, but it’s not that black and white. It all goes back to choice. “The problem is choice,” as Neo put it. We feel locked in our lives, but nothing is stopping us from making decisions that could dramatically alter things. Go to Duke, go pro. Quit your job, start your own business, buy a house, etc. We have choices just like Livingston did … but do we have the balls to act on them?
Do I?
