Stupid people on listservs

Technology, Work April 28th, 2005

This came in on one of the listservs I lurk:

I told you al once, now the second time, take me off your list, I do not
want these emails ever agian. I get at lest 2-10 a day, I don’t read
them, I don’t use jabber, so take me off before I have to contact the
leader of this.

I laughed. Unfortunately, before he could get blasted with a hailstorm of “you moron” replies, the list admin jumped in:

I am the “leader of this”, and I have removed you from the list.

Just proving some people really don’t know how to use the Internet.

Happy 15th, Hubble!

Science & Nature April 26th, 2005

The Hubble space telescope was put into service on April 25, 1990. See some of it’s stuff at the hubble gallery. Also, check out some of the best Hubble images, and vote for your favorite. This is the main Hubble site.

Unfortunately, I think the HST and the space shuttle programs are showing their age, and probably won’t be around too much longer. It will be sad to see them go, but also a little exciting to learn about what’s replacing them.

Status whaaaaa?

Quotes, Technology April 25th, 2005

CITES is having problems with their spam tool. That’s not so bad – it is a new service, and I’m sure lots of people are signing up for it. It’s their status update that cracked me up:

4:36 – Working with the vendor. Working on restoring to condition database was at last night’s backup.

Here’s a piece of chalk. Go up to the blackboard and diagram that sentence for me. I want to see how you do that.

Eric is not allowed to pick TV shows anymore

Entertainment April 24th, 2005

“Locust” is the worst thing I have seen on broadcast TV in a long, long, time.

Netflix delivery speed

Entertainment, Technology April 23rd, 2005

I’ve been trying to watch more of my Netflix rentals to get more value out of my plan. I’ve been every-other-movie-ing new releases and classics/favorites in my queue so that I get a mix of new movies I want to see, and older movies I either missed or want to see again. Right now, the only movie I have is Ray – the others were mailed back earlier this week.

I got an email yesterday that both of my next movies had shipped and would arrive around Tuesday. It seemed like it took them a long time to process my last returns and mail the next movies. But when I checked the mail today, both movies were in the box. I never get that fast a Netflix turnaround, considering my movies come from St. Louis. I couldn’t find any identification on the envelopes where the movies came from, but they sure got here quickly. I wonder if the mail was fast or the email notices were late. (If the emails were late, they were sent from Netflix late – there weren’t any holdups in our mail system.)

Lorem Ipsum

Art & Literature, Quotes April 12th, 2005

“On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.”

I always wondered what that meant…

Join the chocolate m-pire

Entertainment, Food April 12th, 2005

Too good to pass up. Be sure to watch the trailer, and then go buy me lots of dark chocolate M&M’s (in stores now!)

M&M’s chocolate M-pire

(I liked how all the M&Ms were in costume for the Star Wars characters, but Yoda was just a green M&M.)

From the top to the bottom

Sports & Leisure April 11th, 2005

Andy Katz predicts Illinois 2005-2006 to be #24 in the pre-pre-pre-pre-PRE-season top 25. Link

Imagine the shock on my face when I was scrolling down the page, and had to keep scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling to find Illinois. I really haven’t given any thought to next season, although I did walk by Warren Carter (….warren carter *clap, clap, clap*) on the way back from lunch today. I can probably think of 10 or so teams that would give us a run…. but 23? I don’t think so.

Maybe Jon should have used that Catsup bottle at the Hard Rock.

New passwords

Technology, Work April 11th, 2005

While I appreciate them from a security-hat point of view, being forced to change a password is annoying. When CITES expires your NetID password once a year, they send you emails as a warning. A few days into that warning, they interject a notice screen on any bluestem protected apps after you login. I bounce around so many bluestem protected pages in my day, the extra click really bugs me, so I broke down and changed my password. I hate how slow it is to type a new password the first week or so you use it. But, hey, I’m safe!

Happy birthday, RFC 1!
