“Leo will know what to do”
General December 17th, 2005
TV and film fans, especially of “The West Wing” are mourning the death of actor John Spencer (Leo McGarry) on Friday, December 16th. He succumbed to a heart attack and would have been 59 years old next week.
Leo’s character was the patriarch of The West Wing cast, having a knowing, loving, yet powerful insight into all of his encounters. Spenser projected that character into the hearts of all of us. I know he starred in LA Law and many other roles. I’ll have to see if I can find some of his other works on Netflix.
Just the other day a few of us were watching the first episodes of TWW season 5. In the transition between Presidents Barlett and Walken, if there was an uncomfortable situation, everyone said Leo would know what to do. I was sure Leo was going to be one of the transitional staffers next season as TWW moves to a new president. I guess that storyline won’t play out anymore. As much fun as it is to speculate how the seasons/storyline will react, I don’t think this is the right moment.
Both the TV character and the actor will be missed. Rest in peace, John.
