Worst of the Queue awards

General December 19th, 2005

In what should come as no surprise to anyone, American Wedding was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long, long time. I make no excuses for the content in my Netflix queue – I don’t mind watching the bad along with the good. The only requirement is actually wanting to see the movie. I’d seen the previous movies and was in the mood for some potty humor. But this was just bad.

I had more fun reading about Tourette’s Syndrome on wikipedia during the movie, than watching Stiffler trying to act like he had TS.

Some of the movies are really tough to watch. I try to use awareness-of-time as a good indicator of how good a movie is. If I’m in the theater and I need to glance at my watch, that’s a bad thing. If I’m at home and I’m more interested in watching the DVD LCD tick away than watching the actual movie, that’s even worse. When 28 minutes in, I decide if it doesn’t get better, I need to yank it out of the player and drop kick it to the curb, I probably should… why I stuck around another twenty minutes, and eventually through the whole movie is beyond me. It had a few funny elements, but for the most part it sold out on everything that made the original movie hilarious.

So, I’ve decided somewhere on the website or blog I need to make an awards section for movies that are are either so good they should jump to the top of everyone’s queue (I haven’t seen one of those in a while,) or movies that are so, so bad you’re better off using the DVD as a coaster than putting it in the player. I’ll formalize more of that later, but right now in the running of “worst of” (think Razzies,) I would nominate American Wedding and Punch-Drunk Love.

“Leo will know what to do”

General December 17th, 2005

TV and film fans, especially of “The West Wing” are mourning the death of actor John Spencer (Leo McGarry) on Friday, December 16th. He succumbed to a heart attack and would have been 59 years old next week.

Leo’s character was the patriarch of The West Wing cast, having a knowing, loving, yet powerful insight into all of his encounters. Spenser projected that character into the hearts of all of us. I know he starred in LA Law and many other roles. I’ll have to see if I can find some of his other works on Netflix.

Just the other day a few of us were watching the first episodes of TWW season 5. In the transition between Presidents Barlett and Walken, if there was an uncomfortable situation, everyone said Leo would know what to do. I was sure Leo was going to be one of the transitional staffers next season as TWW moves to a new president. I guess that storyline won’t play out anymore. As much fun as it is to speculate how the seasons/storyline will react, I don’t think this is the right moment.

Both the TV character and the actor will be missed. Rest in peace, John.

Went with Chuck and Crissy Hayes, $5 cover. Ass cold outside. The Budweisers were tasty. Chatted with Elizabeth after the show and bought two Sarge CDs – Glass Intact and Distant.

Good show, but a mellow crowed – probably because the sound mixing was probably the worst I’ve heard at Canopy. I kept glaring over at the booth, considering you couldn’t hear the vocals or the base – only set and lead guitar, and he didn’t adjust anything. Need to remember to check with Matt about proper etiquette for telling the mixer to do his fucking job.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the Rep at High Dive at least twice, Cowboy Monkey at least twice, and Canopy at least twice, so we’ll call this my sixth show. Can anyone contest that?
