Computing changes
General March 8th, 2006
This morning, I got a .plan from distributed.net highlighting what the change from PPC to x86 support in MacOS means for real world important things. Like, you know, RC5.
Also, in the you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me category, The Daily Illini tries to explain quantum computing. They soften it by headlining as “Computer thinks when it’s asleep” — which I don’t think is an accurate, but if Junior couldn’t explain it to me, I don’t have a lot of faith in Illini Media. The article reminds me of an old .wav file I have of someone explaining (in an almost Monty Python-ithic way) how government determines where incoming missiles are located — not by knowing where they are, but by knowing where are NOT, and extrapolating.
Regardless, you can’t take the square root of a negative number and there’s no way an electron can move from point A to point C without going through point B. Those are just inventions to make the understanding/math easier. That said, I do stand by the fact you don’t know whether the cat is alive or dead until you check.
