New Years 2007

General November 28th, 2006

Uh, 1/1/07 is about a month away. What’s the new year’s party plans this year? Is someone hosting? Have we already talked about this, and/or are we going to talk about it before the holiday party weekend? I figure Indiana is out (and likely the Ameseseses would be out,) but are we doing it in Champaign? Chicagoland? Galena? Las Vegas? Cancun?

backups of /var were hanging

Work November 27th, 2006

… but I figured out why. This is how I explained it to Josh:

[09:10] trombonekenny: I just deleted a 1.2T /var/log/lastlog file
[09:10] JoshMeans: wow
[09:10] trombonekenny: which is impressive
[09:10] trombonekenny: considering /var is only a 2G disk

[09:10] JoshMeans: lol
[09:10] JoshMeans: inode issues?

[09:10] trombonekenny: explains why backups were failing
[09:11] trombonekenny: “I’m going to read you a 1.2T file.” “Okay, shoot.” “Wait a minute, I don’t know where to find that.”
[09:11] trombonekenny: “I think I’ll just timeout.”

[09:12] JoshMeans: heh

(Edit 11/27 4pm: wikipedia links added to follow some of the geekiness, although it messed up my color scheme. In the comments, you can see that V. used the safeword “Steve”. In my social group, that means “I’ve stopped paying attention because you geeked out on me too much.” It applies to computer talk, music theory, highlights (and lowlights) of elementary education, and pretty much everything.)

Back at the undergrad…

General November 9th, 2006

I think my day long library tour is ending at the undergrad. It had a copy of a complete directory to prime time network and cable TV shows from 194-present (copyright 1999) looking for a TV show from the 50s about a rancher who used a Cessna instead of a horse to corral and stop wrong-doers on his Ranch.

No kidding. I also read the bit on Sifl and Olly. “Sifl was the dark sock, Olly the light-colored (and generally smarter) one, and Chester their sidekick.” Wow, who knew S&O were racist.

PEANUT BUTTER CRACKERS WRAPPED IN CELLOPHANE!

Now I’m doing web research finding popular songs the year I was born. I found this link for 1979. The music is… interesting… (YMCA is #1, I will survive is #2, and Don’t stop ’till you get enough is #3.) I like the quote at the bottom:

“… Thinking back to 1979. My son once asked me what that year was like and I took him to a diner that had a juke box. I put in $5.00 worth of quarters and had it play My Sharona 20 times in a row. We walked out mid way through the third playing, I told him that if he imagined that sound, only 10 times as loud, for 3 months non stop he would have captured that summer perfectly.”

PS… We still go to that diner, but they do not let me play with the juke box anymore.

Na-na-na-na-na-MY SHARONA!

Business and Economics Library

http://www.library.uiuc.edu/bel/ — also doesn’t end in x….

I had to walk all the way to the back of the main room of this library to find an outlet, sharing a power strip with a copier and another girl working on her laptop. Why is power such a problem for these libraries?

At least the air conditioning is on in here. (The sun is on the other side of the building now.) Lots of good signs in here, but this library isn’t as nice or cozy as others I’ve been in. The chairs are cheapo cafeteria chairs, and even though they’re padded, they’re hard.

“A business man walks in and asks if there are any minority-owned general contractors in your area. What do you do?”

Applied Health Science Library

You might know this one as the Applied Life Sciences library, but it’s changed its name recently.

It looks like a junior-high or high school library, with pastel 70s colored walls and furniture, low level bookshelves. It’s a nice space; a nicer open feel than some of the other libraries I’ve been in, but ick to the color scheme. There were a few power outlets nearby.

No wireless? WTF? The website said I should have wireless, but I could barely pick up a signal, and when I did I couldn’t actually talk to the QC server. That’s lame. That’s the first library on campus I’ve had connectivity problems in.

It was warm in that library (warm out today in general,) and there were at least 3 people sleeping. One snoozer was wearing a shirt and tie.

I was there to look up a racist, xenophobic-written article on bullfighting.

Where can I find articles about architecture in Columbus, Indiana?
