TiVo Series3 under $500

General April 29th, 2007

I think most people who follow this blog and would want a TiVo S3 also monitor other places, and have probably already heard about this. But, if you haven’t, TiVo’s running a promption where you can get a TiVo S3 *and* a TiVo 802.11g wireless adapter for $499. That’s an amazing deal, as that’s $300 off list price for the S3 alone, and you get the free wireless ($40-$60 depending where you look.) I paid about $520 for just my S3, (no wireless,) and that was still the best deal to date until this rolled around.

The offer expires April 30th, so you need to act quickly. Also, if you could tell TiVo I referred you (mussulma@uiuc.edu) I would get the referral points, and would be eternally grateful. I need a new iPod. :)

Mixed up collocation

Dad Wants $20K, Says Lesbian Book Disturbed Teens — this is the kind of crap public librarians have to deal with. Things I don’t quite get:

* Why kind of library board bans/removes a book on lesbianism? Because two teenage boys thought it was “disturbing” (read: arousing and dad caught us.) Oh yeah, they’re in Arkansas.
* There’s no way the director is getting fired over this, but I think one family might not be invited back to that library.
* Of course, the Urbana Free Library has a copy. On shelf. I might have to check that out… you know, for research. (It’s research, it’s research…)
* You don’t run across lesbian sex books looking for books on military academies. UFL has the book at 613.96 and miltary academies are in the 355s. For as large as a library as I expect Bensonville, AK has, that’s at least a few shelves apart. (I’m totally ignoring the fact lesbian sex books are under science and technology. Honestly, I would expect it could be classified in the social science … closer to the military academies. Still, serendipity or not, you don’t just, oops, stumble on sex books.)
* The boys are suing because they’ve been having problems sleeping at night. A 14 and 16 year old male find a sex book in the library and now they can’t sleep. I wonder what they’re doing instead of sleeping? Praying, yes, must be praying.

How again is this the library’s problem? And what happens when these kids grow up — there are much scarier things out there than scissoring (thank you South Park.) Seriously, who comes up with this stuff? The money-line from the article: “God was speaking to my heart that day and helped me find the words that proved successful in removing this book from the shelf.” I think God was speaking, but he wasn’t listening.

Drow Drow Drow Drow!

General April 25th, 2007

Someone mentioned The Dark Elf Trilogy in class today, and all I kept thinking was “Drow, drow, drow, drow!!!”

Where’s a race chat function when you need one?

School troubles

General April 16th, 2007

I’m glad that as freaked out as I’m going to get in the next two weeks over semester projects/end-of-semester-time, it’s not nearly on the order of what happened today at Virginia Tech. I mourn for the families and friends, and feel bad for anyone who gets in a position to be that violent, and anyone who has to deal with the fallout from it. Not fun stuff. I reiterate my earlier post: Please stop.
