Regarding Council Bill 2007-115, the amendment of the Champaign Clean Indoor Air Ordinance

Dear representatives,

I encourage you to represent the will of the people and vote *against* a proposed amendment to repeal the smoking ban in establishments with a liquour license. The original ordinance, as well as the Smoke Free Illinois Act (SB500,) represent one of the best ideals of government — to protect its people against public health dangers and to provide fair and impartial access for all citizens. The ordinance has been effective in those respects. To selectively repeal it in bars and restaurants implies that it is okay (and sanctioned by government) that some places are public health dangers and are inaccessible by those in the community who cannot tolerate a smoke-fill environment. I do not support the amended changes to the ordinance, and ask you to vote against it on May 15th.

Introducing the ban in January, repealing it for a few months for a few businesses, only to be banned again in 2008 seems a capricious use of government. The special interests of a few bars and restaurants do not trump the public health concerns of smoking. Especially in the summer/fall months, where beer gardens (already constructed before or because of the ban) offer an outside venue for smoking and alcohol consumption, there is no reason to repeal or amend the ordinance.

Please vote against Council Bill 2007-115, the amendment of the Champaign Clean Indoor Air Ordinance. Thank you.

New CIO and summer band schedule

General May 14th, 2007

Quick updates.

UIUC announced Sally Jackson as the campus’s new Chief Information Officer. It’s good that she’s an alumna (and a pretty neat role for a Speech Comm major,) so I hope to see good things come from her. The CIO office is relatively new at UIUC and the previous occupant really didn’t make an impact on department level IT (he was more big picture, how does UIUC fit into everything everyone else thinks they should be doing, etc.) It looks like she’ll be more hands on, and I like that.

I also signed up for summer band again this year. The concerts are Thursday, June 21 and Wednesday July 18th. Mark your calendars.
