Finished Deadwood
General July 29th, 2007
I finished watching Deadwood this weekend. Although I’m satisfied that the show didn’t resolve (the last episode is called “Tell him something pretty,” from a line where Swearengen regrets not giving Johnny the closure he’s looking for,) I’m looking forward to the followup made-for-TV movies HBO has wish-washingly committed to producing.
Tony told me once that this is like a western version of Shakespeare. Given the amazing character depth and the powerful soliloquies punctuated with profanity, I agree. This was powerful TV, and I recommend anyone reading this to rent or buy the DVDs. I know what’s on my Christmas list this year.
Anyway, to give closure to the series, I share with you an E.B. Farnum monologue from the last DVD.
Why I have not wiped his expectoration from my cheek is understandable. I am threatened with death if I do. That I stand immobile these hours later speaks of a flaw in my will. Surely this is not the culminating indignity that remains, for example, receiving his regurgitations. Swallowing his feces. Would I stand stoic still?
E.B. gets angry and wipes his face clean.
I am going to fuck you up. I am going to fuck. You. Up. And I’m just the kind of cunt you let close.
