In a poorly written news article, researchers at the University of Illinois try to use fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) to highlight the importance of their research and guilt out some grant money.

According to Elnashai, more and potentially catastrophic earthquakes are certain to happen in the future for the Midwest.

“The damage will dwarf that caused by Hurricane Katrina to New Orleans, resulting in several thousand dead and tens of thousands injured. Direct economic losses are estimated at between $120 billion and $150 billion dollars, making it the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history.”

Grrrrreat.

While I do believe it’s plausible that the Midwest could have a serious earthquake and this warrants study and preparation, that group has been bilking and wasting so much damned money for years it’s ridiculous.
