I work for the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am a systems administrator in the Technology Services Group (TSG), the IT support group for the department. My university title/appointment is "Research Programmer" -- but so is almost everyone else in my department, regardless of whether they do research or program. On good days, I do a bit of both.
My main tasks are overseeing the departmental data protection service (tape backups.) We backup core servers/infrastructure machines, research servers, and client desktops at almost 8TB of data for a full backup over almost 400 machines.
I'm also the primary networking admin for Siebel Center. This includes managing the networking devices in the building and the IP/DNS/DHCP services that use them, as well providing user support for our wired and wireless networks.
I also assist Barb Leisner with the TSG student programs (labsitters and helpdesk) and oversee the undergraduate systems administrator program.
In my job, I've assisted in the move to Siebel Center with the networking and instructional labs. I've designed and deployed a secure 802.11 WPA network against Windows AD authentication. I'm getting to be a proficient EMC/Legato Networker administrator.
